Quick Ratio Steering gear info for EK owners, 96-00 Civic with Power Steering

I made a discovery and want to add to it. It seems that the Civic's power steering rack has some good news. The steering system is a power 'rack and pinion' system. This means its got a rack with teeth, and is moved along with a shaft that has a gear, called the pinion shaft.

The Civic pinion has 8 teeth, the Integra pinion has 9. The 94-01 Integra pinion shaft is dimensionally identical to the 96-00 Civic one and can swap right in!

This shows the top piece of the steering rack removed. You are to press the shaft out of the steering rack body sleeve, but I used wood on the body and a plastic hammer. I then did the same to the Integra one. As you can see, the bodies at the top have the hardline locations in different spots, but could be interchangable if you were to do some hardline bending or if you were to replace the factory hoses with steel braided flex hoses.

The Integra's steering is about 3.2 turns lock to lock while our civic one is 3.6. The addition is only of one extra tooth, but the good news is that it sits just right, AND that it gives you a more responsive steering. You turn the wheel the same distance and the wheels are now turning at a bigger angle. This is like how Quaife does the faster ratio steering gears.

This only works for the power steering civics, the manual has smaller parts and cannot fit.

Remember to get an alignment after this procedure. I am going to try and remove the steering column and do this swap without removing the entire steering rack (because you'd have to drop the shift linkage and the dreaded 'bitch pin'. Its 2 bolts and 4 threaded hardline ends. Wish me luck!
